About Big Red Chili

By day, I work in software—but my true passion is in the kitchen.

As you can see, Big Red Chili’s Chinese name is 大洪油, and here’s how it got its name.

大 means big, and my nickname, especially in gaming contexts, is Dahong, or 大洪 which was a nickname one of my former students gave me in HS and it stuck ever since. 洪—my surname, means flood, but people often mistake it for 红—which means red—just like how my chili oil surprises with depth beyond just heat. This would eventually lead to the inspiration of my chili oil! The name is a play on words!

My interest in food started when I was a child, helping my grandparents and mom who immigrated from Wuhan, Hubei in China, in the kitchen. My love for cooking then skyrocketed in college, where I found joy in recreating the bold, comforting flavors I grew up with. Now I’m here to share my own carefully handcrafted chili oil that’s more than just heat, with layers of umami, a subtle natural sweetness, and the perfect balance of heat that anybody can enjoy. I pick out the highest quality ingredients, including chilis from Sichuan, as well as organic aromatics. It’s a thoughtfully crafted chili oil, jarred with care and made to elevate whatever you’re cooking or eating.
